RE: Diesel in cold temperatures

And so me too, just for the fun of it, I will pick a nit with jauguston's post who picked a nit with Tomcats post about winter diesel being a mix of kerosene and #2 diesel. Jauguston indicated that Winter blend diesel is a blend of #1 and #2 diesel. Actually, not many refiners use #1 any more due to cost... most are using a variety of CFI (Cold Flow Improver) products that modify the size and shape of the wax crystals that are formed when ambient temperatures are at or near the cloud point of the fuel. Actually, many refiners have eliminated #1 at many of their terminals across the US. Now back to the Turkey day leftovers... :B

RE: F350 vs. F450

Still think that the biggest difference between my 2007 F-350 DRW LB 4X4 and my 2008 F-450 pickup 4X4 is the size of the smile on my face when I'm pulling my Tow Hauler. Note smile before with F-350 :) Note smile after with the F-450 :B

RE: I have a 2004 F350. How much toyhauler can I really tow?

We tow our similar unit with a new F-450. Weighed our rig without our Harley's in the back. F-450 and KZ New Vision Sportster 40P Without Harley's in the garage Steer Axle 5500lb Drive Axle 7960lb Trailer Axle 11240lb Gross Weight 24700lb Just the F-450 by itself Steer Axle 5440lb Drive Axle 4380lb Trailer Axle 0lb Gross Weight 9820lb We have a second A/C unit in the bedroom and a 5500 Marquis Gold Onan Genny which I'm sure adds a bit to the pin weight. Without toys our Pin weight would be 3580lb and the trailer is weighing 14880lb. This weight was with minimal water in the tank (probably about 20gals) nothing in the black or grey tanks and very little in the way of luggage, food and beverage (Read: Beer:B) or clothing. Note that we had a 2007 F-350 DRW LB 4X4 that we traded in on the F-450. While we were on flat ground without hills and curves we felt fine. While towing in the Smoky Mountains with hills, curves, tight roads etc., we didn't feel safe. Felt like the tail was wagging the dog. Actually started buying the F-450 while we were camping in the mountains... After towing the same rig with both vehicles... Let me tell you, HUGE difference in feel between the F-350 and the F-450. With the F-450 you feel like you are in control of the load, not like you are barely getting by... I'm sure that the Tow Hauler that you're talking about has very similar weights as ours. Hope this helps with your decision.

RE: Generator Box Insulation

Where can you find the dynamat? I bought my dynamat Extreme from Circuit City http://www.circuitcity.com/ssm/Dynamat-Xtreme-Trunk-Kit-19405/sem/rpsm/oid/152124/rpem/ccd/productDetail.do Bought the Dynamat hood liner from a Amazon vendor... can't remeber which one. It is very light weight so it wasn't much to ship. The Dynamat extreme directly on the sheet metal box reduces the noise that comes from the vibration and then the the hood liner material on top of it deadens the remaining sound... it also will withstand even more heat than the dynamat extreme so it's a good way to finish it off. Really made my installation quiet.

RE: Generator Box Insulation

Yes, I used dynamat extreme first on all sides including the bottom side of the compartment prior to the installation of the onan marquis gold 5500, then added the dynamat hood liner on top if it on the side walls and ceiling of the compartment. After the generator installation, the dealership said it was one of the quietest units that they had ever heard. Heat doesn't seem to affect the dynamat at all.

RE: tandem vs single axles

When I tow with the truck, I do not need the w/d hitch and it tows better. Thus my post regarding upgrading your tires to a higher load range tire and the longer wheel base. Your truck probably has both. :W

RE: tandem vs single axles

Sounds like a combination of things to me. Sounds like you have a short wheel base TV that has nice cushy tires mad for a SUV. Think, mushy side walls. What you feel is the trailer dragging the tow vehicle and the mushy side walls getting squishy under the load. The tail is wagging the dog. The side walls on the TV tires are not stiff enough to counteract the dragging effect of the trailer and it is made worse since the distance between the front and rear tires is so short on the Liberty. I really don't think that the tandem axle trailer will make too much difference here. Reminds me of a trip I made with a friend of mine in his Cadillac Escalade (think cushy tires) pulling a similar trailer to bike week... difference was his was a tandem axle haulmark. Exactly the same symptoms as you describe. I would say that the trip was about a .9 on the old pucker factor. The one thing that helped his rig was different tires on the Escalade. He went up to a higher load range tire that helped eliminate the mushy side walls. Made a big difference on his rig. Still worry about the short wheel base of your TV though... My friend traded the Escalade on a longer wheel based Suburban. HUGE difference...

RE: Axle Alignment Question

bar425 Peg Leg, thanks for the tip on 2004 Al-Ko. I have the 2004 Al-Ko leaf spring setup. I'm assuming you where referring to the rubber torsion axles not the leaf spring correct? John, Yes, the Rubber Torsion axles are what I was referring to.

RE: Axle Alignment Question

If your 2005 Forest River Cardinal has the same axles as my previous 2005 All American Sport had, you could have two problems. The first problem we had was that the axles were part of the Al-KO torsion axle issue where the spindles were bending. I'm sure if you a search on the 04's you'll find lots of info. After they replaced our axles, the second problem we had was that they didn't tighten the hubs enough and it caused a lot of play in the wheels, causing the tires to wear unevenly again. General RV in Wixom, MI is the one who did the work on ours... Good luck!

RE: F350 or F450

Note the rig in my signature. My former TV was a 2007 F-350 DRW LB 4X4. Can't begin to explain what a difference the F450 made in towing confidence over the F350.

RE: Never thought I'd lust after a toy hauler...

The Inferno is a nice unit. We tow our similar unit with a new F-450. Handles it well. Weighed our rig without our Harley's in the back last week. RE: Is a dually a must have for towing large 5er?

It's a must have for me. JMHO... It's a must have for you because your rig is 600 feet long. :S :B Britt Hey, the post asked if a dually was a must have for towing a LARGE 5er. It's a LARGE 5er :B Look who's talking about a rig that's 600 feet long! :W

RE: Ford 100k mile and up diesel warranty

I purchased the 21 component for my 2007 F350 here. http://www.dieselwarranty.com/index.php?option=com_frontpage&Itemid=1 I'll probably buy another one for my new F450 from the same place.

RE: Looking for advice....

We used to have a 36cks All American Sport and towed it with a F-350 LB DRW 4X4. We love our new KZ New Vision Sportster 40P but found that the F-350 was overloaded. Both on paper and feel. Let me tell you... BIG difference between the 36 footers and the 40 footers. The F350 pulled the 36 with ease and we felt totally in control. The 40P is 42.5 feet long and heavy... most of the others you mentioned are right there in the same category. We now pull the with a F450 and love it. With the F450 we feel in control again. We really don't have any complaints about our KZ.

RE: 08 F 450 ?s

I just went from a 2007 F-350 DRW LB 4X4 4.10 rear with the 6.0 to a new 2008 F-450 with the 2.30 rear end. I'm towing a KZ New Vision Sportster Toy Hauler 40P that is about 17,000lbs loaded. Took it for a shake down trip this weekend about 45 minutes from home. Although it wasn't a long distance trip, immediately I could tell a HUGE difference. No comparison between the two trucks. The tail is no longer wagging the dog. I feel back in control now! Lots of power, lots of brakes, and really feels like the truck is controlling the trailer, not the other way around. Just my experience, but IMHO, there is a huge difference in the trucks. I'm VERY happy with my decision.
